I made Perfect Diamond in response to seeing the launch of Homebrew Factory. I've wanted to release an NES game with physical copies ever since I started programming it. With Homebrew Factory, I had an easy way to do this, I just needed a game worthy of a commercial release. I went with something simple, a tetromino-based puzzle, so I could put my effort more into making it as polished as I could.
Since I was making a nice polished game, I figured I should also release a paid digital version. Then I decided the digital version should be released first, because if any bugs are found, I can fix them before the physical release. Then I decided that I needed a standalone PC version that wouldn't need an emulator. That ended up making the project take longer than I had originally intended, but it's hard to resist scope creep.
I expected the digital version to be a commercial failure, as very few people are buying NES games in 2025, especially in digital form. And it was, but even more so than I expected. I would need to sell about 100x as many copies as I did if I wanted to eke out a living from NES gamedev. I thought, since many NES games' kickstarters reach 5-figures, there are a decent number of people willing to pay for new NES games, though not enough to make a living off of it. Perhaps I just need to market it better, but I don't want to sink money into something that is unlikely to make a return. So this is likely the last time I'll try actually selling an NES game, though I will continue to make them for fun.
Currently I haven't released the physical version yet, but I plan on releasing it soon.
